Why was Open Road Tolling created?
Open Road Tolling (ORT) was created to make your travel faster and safer. It’s no secret that congestion and gridlock are a constant challenge for motorists in South Florida. Eliminating the need to stop, slow down or line up to pay tolls on the five MDX-managed roadways can significantly improve your commute time day in and day out, as well as improve safety by preventing accidents that would have been caused by weaving in and out of lanes or stopping short to pay a toll.
How much does ORT cost?
Users will pay for the portion of the roadway they drive, no more, no less. Exact amounts vary by expressway. For example, ORT is currently live on SR 924. On SR 924, many drivers will now pay less than the current $1.00 toll (SunPass rate). In order to make the system fair, drivers using only half the roadway will now only pay 50 cents, while drivers choosing to use the entire stretch will continue to pay $1.00. ORT is coming to SR 874 and SR 878 next. Click here to see a detailed map of entry/exit points and tolls on these expressways.
What if I don't have a SunPass? Can I still use ORT?
Yes, drivers are urged to use the current SunPass only lanes on roads that have converted to ORT. If you drive through a gantry without a SunPass, you will simply receive a bill in the mail for the amount of the toll, plus an additional processing fee. All drivers are encouraged to purchase a SunPass as soon as possible.
I passed through a tolling gantry without a Sunpass. What Now?
Don't worry, all MDX users are customers. Please call our customer service center at 1-888-833-0910 to register your license plate. You will not be receiving a ticket, you will simply be receiving a bill in the mail for the amount of the toll, plus a additional processing fee.
Is improved driving the only benefit of Open Road Tolling?
No. ORT allows us to collect funds from all users of MDX expressways to be able to fund roadway improvements, maintenance, operations, and expansion of the system without having to build more toll plazas or increasing tolls. This will provide a better quality of life for residents in our community by giving them a better expressway system that will save time, generate jobs and aid in the economic development of our region.
ORT is also good news for commerce in and around South Florida because it greatly enhances the flow of goods and services on our highways. From trucks to taxis, it’s keeping business on the move.
Plus, ORT is a greener solution, because with open road tolling cars will no longer be idling in line at conventional tollbooths. ORT helps you enjoy money-saving fuel efficiency, and it improves air quality by decreasing carbon monoxide and other emissions created by congestion on our highways.
Why was MDX created?
MDX was created to ensure that tolls collected locally on its system of five highways (SR 924, SR 874, SR 878, SR 112 and SR 836) would remain local, and be reinvested in local improvements to the system. MDX does not receive property or gas taxes, or funds from the half penny transit tax, and we do not receive federal funds or funds from the State of Florida Transportation Trust Fund. All projects are funded exclusively with revenue from your tolls.
Toll revenues benefit the drivers who use MDX roads by allowing us to introduce new technology and safety improvements that enhance the overall driving experience. Because MDX does not receive tax revenue, toll collection is critical to helping us achieve our vision of moving Miami-Dade forward, into the future.
Why Charge Tolls to All Drivers?
Because MDX receives no other revenues except that from tolls, fair and proportionate tolling is critical to maintaining and ultimately improving Miami-Dade’s expressways.
In addition to funding Open Road Tolling, revenue from tolls is used for critical pavement and landscaping projects, road maintenance, safety improvements and expansion to the system, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) which uses technology to address congestion, and our complimentary Road Rangers service, which improves comfort and safety on our roads.
Furthermore, your tolls fund built and planned highway extensions that play a crucial role in connecting communities to the viable work, educational and entertainment areas in the county.
